WisPolitics Update: September 8, 2017

Rep. Christine Sinicki, D-Milwaukee, says a faction of "young legislators who have never legislated" led the charge to oust Minority Leader Peter Barca, who announced he will step down at the end of September.

Barca angered some members of the caucus when he worked with Republicans on the $3 billion Foxconn bill, praised some aspects of it and then voted for the legislation.

But Sinicki said she didn't blame Barca for supporting the package for Foxconn, which is looking to locate a plant in or near his Kenosha district. She also said discontent with Barca had been brewing in the caucus for some time.

"They don't know how difficult it is to be a leader and were looking for a reason to remove him," Sinicki said.

Gov. Scott Walker weighed in on Twitter, saying: "Democrats think harsh partisan attacks more vital for leader than standing up for good-paying, family-supporting jobs in your own district."

Rep. Gordon Hintz, of Oshkosh, tells WisPolitics he is running to be the next Assembly Dem leader and will formally announce his intentions this afternoon.

Hintz's decision comes a day after Rep. Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, said he would resign as minority leader at month's end.
